10-Day Bhutan Hiking and Culture Tour Itinerary (Mongar)

Thimphu

Day 1: Arrival in Paro - Drive to Thimphu

Arrive in Paro amid breathtaking Himalayan peaks and crisp mountain air. Drive to Thimphu, stopping at Tamchog Lhakhang, a 15th-century temple with Thangtong Gyalpo's historic iron. chain bridge. In Thimphu, visit the towering Buddha Dordenma, a 51-meter statue housing over 125,000 smaller Buddhas, radiating peace and compassion. Enjoy a gentle forest hike to Changangkha Lhakhang, perched above the city, before ending the day at Tashichho Dzong, a magnificent fortress blending tradition and spirituality. Overnight: Thimphu

Thimphu

Day 2: Thimphu - Nature, Monastery, and Local Life

Start the day with a gentle hike on the Wangditse Nature Trail, winding through pine and rhododendron forests with panoramic views of Tashichho Dzong and the city below. Later, take a more challenging trek to Phajoding Monastery, a peaceful 13th-century retreat high above the valley, where monks meditate amid ancient relics. Return to the city to visit the National Memorial Chorten, observing locals spinning prayer wheels and offering quiet prayers. End the day at the lively Centenary Farmers' Market and stroll along Art Street, experiencing Bhutanese crafts, local flavors, and everyday life. Overnight: Thimphu

Punakha

Day 3: Thimphu - Dochula Pass & Punakha

Embark on an early morning hike to Mount Batur for a breathtaking sunrise view. Have breakfast at a coffee plantation and taste Bali’s famous Luwak coffee. Visit Tegenungan and Tukad Cepung Waterfalls, hidden gems in the jungle.

Punakha

Day 4: Punakha - Gangtey & Phobjikha Valley

Depart Punakha and drive east to the serene Gangtey (Phobjikha) Valley, Bhutan's only glacial valley, shaped like a bowl and dotted with traditional farmhouses and forests. Begin a hike from Longtey village, passing rhododendron-covered ridges, yak pastures, and bamboo thickets, before opening up to panoramic views of Gangtey Goemba and the valley below. Arrive at Gangtey Monastery, the largest Nyingma monastery in Bhutan. Spend the evening. strolling through the valley, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere and stunning natural beauty. Overnight: Gangtey

Trongsa

Day 5: Gangtey - Trongsa & Rukubji

Drive early to Pele La Pass (3,390 m), then hike through herding paths and forests to Rukubji, a traditional village preserving Bhutan's ancient way of life. Continue to Trongsa and take a short walk from the viewpoint down to Trongsa Dzong. Bhutan's largest fortress, steeped in history and once central to trade and governance between east and west.

Bumthang

Day 6: Trongsa - Bumthang & Tharpaling

Drive into the sacred valleys of Bumthang, Bhutan's spiritual heartland. Hike from Tharpaling Monastery (3,600 m) to Lamai Goenpa, perched on a ridge with sweeping views of the valley. In the afternoon, explore a section of the Bushmen Trail in Tang Valley, passing traditional villages and pastoral landscapes, ending near the Swiss Guest House, known for its architecture and cheese-making heritage. Overnight: Bumthang

Mongar

Day 7: Bumthang - Mongar & Eastern Highlands

Drive over high mountain passes into eastern Bhutan, stopping at Ura Valley, a village where time seems to stand still. From Kikila Pass, hike downhill through forests to Depong, then continue to Mongar, noticing the shift to subtropical landscapes and the unique culture, food, and dialects of Eastern Bhutan. Overnight: Mongar

Paro

Day 8: Mongar - Return to Paro

Day 8: Mongar - Return to Paro Embark on a long but scenic drive back to Paro, crossing diverse landscapes, mountain passes, and rivers. Stop at local villages along the way and soak in the warmth of Bhutanese hospitality and ever-changing vistas. Overnight: Paro

Paro

Day 9: Paro - Taktsang & Cultural Sights

Rise early for the iconic Tiger's Nest Monastery (Taktsang), perched on a cliff 900 meters above the valley. Hike through pine forests and waterfalls, arriving at sacred halls where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated. After descending, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest temples. Spend the evening exploring Paro town, browsing crafts, traditional clothing, and wooden carvings, and soaking in the local atmosphere.. Overnight: Paro

Departure

Day 10: Departure from Bhutan

After breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport for your departure. Take with you the memories, the whispers of prayer flags, the scent of pine, and the serere spirit of the Dragon Kingdom. Farewell & Tashi Delek!
